The Port of Morrow is seeking an experienced accounting professional to fill either the Assistant Controller or Accounting Specialist position.  Only one position will be filled, depending on successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.  Position will be involved in Financial Accounting, Budgeting (Oregon Municipal Budget Law), Financial Analysis & Reporting, and Cost Accounting.


  • Knowledge and experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge and experience using accounting software, and understanding the transactional effects and impact on the general ledger and other system modules.
  • Knowledge and experience applying financial analysis techniques to develop and prepare
  • financial reports.
  • Advanced skills in using software technology, especially Microsoft Excel, Access and Word.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to colleagues and business partners
  • B.S. degree in Accounting preferred (not required)
  • Two to four years’ experience in municipal accounting preferred (not required)

The positions of Assistant Controller or Accounting Specialist will be expected to perform the most responsible accounting-related functions and have a substantial impact on the integrity of financial systems, reporting, and management decision making. They are responsible for accounting, reporting, and financial analysis and are significantly relied upon for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness by Port management for decision making purposes. This position analyzes and proposes solutions to problems without direct supervisory involvement and functions on general instructions and guidelines without close daily supervision. The Assistant Controller position may also provide lead direction and training to office support and other accounting staff.

Expected duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Maintenance of capital asset depreciation schedules
  • Preparation of real property returns
  • Tracking equipment use for cost allocations
  • Preparation of yearend Audit workpapers
  • Assistance with month and yearend adjustments
  • Assistance with budgetary process and preparation of budget v. actual statements
  • Assistance with preparation of financial statements
  • Assistance and knowledge of Oregon Public Meeting Law, Oregon Public Records, Oregon Public Contracting and other municipal requirements
  • Human Resource related activities
  • Oversite and backup for Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions
  • Reconciliations of banking or other accounting transactions
  • Preparation or review of payroll reports
  • Preparation or review of 1120, 990 and CT-12 forms

 Successful candidate is expected to have a cheerful can do attitude as they may be expected to assist with activities outside their normal scope of work.

The Port of Morrow is an EOE and offers competitive wages and benefits.

The salary for the Assistant Controller will range from $70,000-$85,000 DOE and the salary for the Accounting Specialist will range from $54,000-$70,000 DOE.
